Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a very powerful psychological technique developed by Dr Francine Shapiro in the US in the1980’s. It has a lot of research done into it for working with traumatic experiences and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for working with people with post traumatic stress disorder.
The types of traumatic events that it can be used to treat include:
- war-related experiences
- natural disasters
- road traffic accidents
- workplace accidents
- childhood sexual and / or physical abuse or neglect
- surgical trauma
However it can also be used to help people with performance anxiety or other problems including:
- low self esteem
- bereavement and loss
- panic attacks and anxiety
It can be used where any current problem has its roots in difficult experiences from the past as it helps to remove the emotional and psychological connections between the trauma and now. It can be used as a standalone therapy or as part of ongoing counselling or psychotherapy.
